Fake encounters and extra-judicial killings by Police forces in India!

The issue of fake encounters and extra-judicial killings by police forces in India is a long-standing problem that continues to plague the country. These incidents not only violate the fundamental right to life and liberty of citizens but also erode the trust between the police and the people they are meant to serve and protect.

New Dehli (Tamsil Shahezad Khan): One of the key reasons why fake encounters and extra-judicial killings continue to occur is the culture of impunity within the police force. Many police officers believe that they can act without fear of consequences, even if their actions violate the law. This is often due to a lack of accountability and oversight mechanisms, which allows the police to act with impunity.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) data reveals that from January 1, 2017, to January 31, 2022, there were 655 cases of deaths caused by police encounters in India. Among the states with the highest number of cases, Chhattisgarh had 191 cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 117 cases, Assam with 50 cases, Jharkhand with 49 cases, Odisha with 36 cases, Jammu and Kashmir with 35 cases, Maharashtra with 26 cases, and Bihar with 22 cases.

On the other hand, several states and union territories did not report any cases of deaths caused by police encounters during the same period. These were Goa, Mizoram, Sikkim, Tripura, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry. NHRC data shows that there were 8 cases of deaths caused by police encounters in Delhi during this time.

The consequences of these actions are far-reaching. Families of the victims are left to suffer the loss of their loved ones without any closure or justice. The trust between the police and the citizens is eroded, and people begin to lose faith in the ability of the legal system to protect them from abuse of power by the state. This, in turn, can have a significant impact on the rule of law in the country.

To address this issue, it is essential to hold the police force accountable for their actions. The government needs to take concrete steps to reform the police force and ensure that the culture of impunity is replaced with a culture of accountability. This can be done by strengthening the oversight mechanisms for the police, ensuring that they are held accountable for any abuses of power, and providing training to police officers on the principles of human rights and the rule of law.

Another important aspect of addressing this issue is to ensure that victims of fake encounters and extra-judicial killings receive justice. This includes providing compensation to the families of the victims and ensuring that those responsible for these crimes are held accountable and brought to justice.

In conclusion, the issue of fake encounters and extra-judicial killings by police forces in India is a grave violation of human rights and the rule of law. The government must take urgent steps to address this issue, by holding the police force accountable for their actions, providing justice to the victims and their families, and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld. Only then can India truly become a just and democratic society where the rights of all citizens are protected.
