Vijay Secures Majority Mark As Tamil Nadu Heads Towards Historic Coalition Government

Chennai, May 9: Actor-turned-politician Vijay appears set to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), crossed the crucial majority mark in the 234-member Assembly with support from regional and Left-backed allies. The dramatic political developments capped three days of intense negotiations, defections, and coalition talks that kept the state on edge.

TVK, which emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections, initially struggled to gather the support of 118 MLAs required to form the government. However, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) extended unconditional support to Vijay on Friday afternoon, followed shortly by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), pushing the coalition tally to 120 seats.

The TVK-led alliance now includes Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, marking what could become Tamil Nadu’s first broad-based coalition government in decades.

Political celebrations erupted outside TVK headquarters and the VCK office in Chennai as supporters burst crackers and waved party flags after confirmation of the support letters. Vijay’s supporters described the moment as a “historic political transformation” for the state.

According to sources, Tamil Nadu Governor RV Arlekar is likely to meet Vijay again soon after reportedly delaying a scheduled trip to Kerala. Vijay is expected to formally present letters of support from 120 MLAs during another meeting on Monday.

Earlier this week, the Governor had twice declined to invite Vijay to form the government, citing his inability to prove majority support. TVK leaders accused rival parties of attempting to delay the formation process while negotiations continued behind closed doors.

The final breakthrough came after prolonged discussions with VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan. Political observers said the VCK’s decision effectively ended the uncertainty surrounding government formation.

Meanwhile, cracks have reportedly emerged within the AIADMK. Sources claimed senior leader CV Shanmugam may lead a rebellion against party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, with more than 30 MLAs allegedly unhappy with the party’s handling of the post-election scenario. Reports also suggested that several AIADMK leaders could switch allegiance to TVK in the coming days, although no official confirmation has been issued.

Outgoing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin conceded defeat and extended his wishes to the incoming government, while promising that the DMK would function as a “constructive opposition”.

Congress MP Jothimani accused the BJP of attempting to influence the AIADMK to prevent Vijay from taking power, alleging behind-the-scenes political pressure during the coalition negotiations.

Political commentator S Gurumurthy said TVK’s initial approach to the Governor had complicated matters unnecessarily. According to him, Vijay should have first claimed the right to form the government as the single-largest party rather than presenting a coalition arrangement prematurely.

The developments mark an extraordinary rise for Vijay, whose party was launched only two years ago. His rapid transition from cinema superstar to potential Chief Minister has reshaped Tamil Nadu politics and challenged the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK.

If sworn in, Vijay would lead one of the most politically diverse alliances the state has witnessed in recent years, with coalition partners expected to play a crucial role in policy and governance.

The Governor’s next decision is now being closely watched as Tamil Nadu prepares for what could be a historic political transition.
